The Dollhouse Dilemma

lovingfam

Fisher Price used to offer "Hispanic" dolls for the Loving Family home but they have been discontinued.

I do understand that families can be very diverse and it would be tough to feature dolls that would adequately reflect every ethnicity.  However, I think that discontinuing "Hispanic" dolls is a step in the wrong direction.  That does not impress me.

However, I am torn.  I am torn because I really, really LOVE the Loving Family House!!  I have checked out the other dollhouses on the market  and...if I was a little girl, I would probably choose the Loving Family home over the other homes (although there are other good quality and super CUTE homes that are available and I have researched them).

So, after much thought, we decided to make a compromise that we feel would best reflect our family and our values.  We purchased the Loving Family home that includes a few "Caucasian" dolls and we also purchased dolls from another dollhouse set (Caring Corners) that are similar in size to the Loving Family dolls but are of another ethnicity.  It is important to us that Emma has dolls that are available to her that reflect her ethnicity and the ethnicities of others.  We have a multi ethnic household...  I am Caucasian with a German/Czech background.  Jason is 1/2 Filipino and Emma is Guatemalan...  I think it's fun that Emma will have a diverse dollhouse family...a family that reflects her own.  : )

I know that Emma is VERY interested in this dollhouse because she keeps asking me to "rewind" (love Tivo) the Loving Family commercials when they come on so that she can watch them again...hee hee.

Also...  I did contact Fisher Price directly to ask if they had any additional "Hispanic" doll families left.  Sadly, no.  So, I did respectfully voice my concern and displeasure.  ; )

God bless,

Tera

Why don't you check out ebay, there may be people selling the dolls you are looking for. Good Luck!

I did contact Fisher Price and they do not have any sets left. I have been checking Ebay for a few months and the discontinued dolls and doll sets are so expensive but I have my eyes peeled for a good deal!! ;)

Fun! Emily is getting one for Christmas too!!! We compared and compared and compared and ended up getting her the Barbie house. There are so many choices and we too didn't find any hispanic dolls with any of them or in the stores.

We are giving this house to the girls for Christmas too! I can't wait to see their reaction! I also was bothered by the lack of choices for dolls. We ended up buying the AA girl because she had black hair and similar skin tone to Izzy. I just wish her hair had been straight. It is frustrating that they don't include more choices.

I also wish that Disney would make Pocahontas dolls for toddlers like all of the other princess dolls. Wasn't she the daughter of a chief?? Doesn't that make her a princess of the tribe?? It doesn't make much sense to me that you can only get her in Barbie form.

Good luck in finding the set that you're looking for...that has to be pretty frustrating. :(

Lotsa hugs!

Oh I see you've already had others make the same suggestion I was thinking, ebay; it's very likely there would be just what you are looking for, and possibly either gently used or even new. Love your site, as always.

She is going to love the doll house (obviously, from her reaction just to the commercials). It's awful that Fisher Price has discontinued that set...what are they thinking?

Tera - Great minds must think alike!! We bought this dollhouse for Gabbie as well, or shall I say Santa bought it:) Anyway, we decided on the African American family and I will be purchasing some caucasian people as well to go with it. I did not even know they used to make it in hispanic! Now I am super bummed now that they don't.I purchased the deluxe one that came with all of the people and twins so I will just add a few extras on. Anyway, we try to do a mix of people for Gabbie as well so I am hoping by buying a few extra people, like the grandma, and a little blonde girl that looks like Gabbie's cousin, it will be a little more diverse for her.

Hi Tera, I looked for Hispanic dolls for when Renee was little. I did find some. I got the Nativity set last year and we will sit with Eddie and play with him and then it goes back on the shelf. Since Eddie is mixed, we want him to see a variety too. He is still young yet. Emma's Christmas pictures are just so cute. You are so way ahead of the season. Hugs
