On the Subject of Purty Blogs...

I have received quite a few very sweet emails regarding my previous post and my own little bloggy (most of the emails have questions about using digital scrapbooking kits and digital pre-designed blog graphic kits for creating blogs).  You all asked a ton of really good and thoughtful questions!  : )  So, I thought that I would post to try to answer some of the questions...

There is a difference between digital scrapbooking kits and pre-designed digital blog graphic kits that were created especially for creating blogs.

GORGEOUS and fully designed banner, button and background kits (like the kit that is featured on Amber's blog) make putting a blog together fairly simple if you have basic blog design skills and Adobe knowledge.  The pre-designed kits allow you to simply add your own pics and text to the fully designed banners, buttons, etc. and then you add the graphics to your blog.  No graphic designing is needed because the banners and the buttons are already purty and ready to roll!  Make sure to read the terms of use that come with each kit...for example, some kits allow for commercial use and some do not, some kits can be used to set up blogs by a paid designer and some can not, most require you to give credit where credit is due, etc.  Please email the designers directly if you ever have any questions about the use of their kits...they are usually very helpful and knowledgeable too.  : )

Also, besides pre-designed blog kits, you can purchase kits filled with miscellaneous coordinated digital scrapbook graphics.  The misc. kits do not include completed banners, buttons, etc.  The misc. graphic kits require you to use the graphics that are contained in the kits to create your own designs for scrapbook pages, crafts and sometimes even blogs.  Design work fun is involved in working with those kits...you aren't simply adding text and pics.  My current blog was created by using this type of a kit.  It is important to read the terms of use that come with the kits to make sure that the artist has approved the use of their art for blogs, etc.

Was that helpful at all?  An expert I am not, by any means.  : P

One of the most common questions from recent emails:  "Are you going to start a blog design/redesign service?"  Maybe, but I am just not sure.  Is that a lame coy answer?  *blush*  I might like to but nothing definite has been decided.   I may decide to start something at some point in the future.  : )  Tinkering with my blog has been a hobby for some time and I like to help friends for fun from time to time.  I have recently really enjoyed using digital scrapbooking graphics on my blog...it is so challenging and fun!  If I decide to set up a formal business at some point, I will certainly let you know.  But as of this moment in time, a formal TLC design business does not exist.  : )

Onward...  : )

I helped a sweet gal with her blog set up as a fun favor.  : )  (With permission from SMJ).  Amber had lots of fun ideas and I just helped her to put things in place.  I really love the result...and so does she...and that's what really matters!  Check out her blog!  Click here to visit Amber...below you will see a sneak peek.  : )  Amber, you're a sweetie...don't be a stranger.  : )

Not much is happening here.  Jason has been really busy with work so Emma and I have just been hanging out.  We went to a fair in our town this morning.   We had a great time people watching...Emma loved seeing all of the other little kids.  : )  On Friday, we had a fun play date with a few families from a local Guatemalan adoption group.  It is always fun and interesting to get together families who have adopted.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!  : )

Stuff that I Like

I enjoy reading about stuff that people like.  : )  I like reading reviews, Consumer Reports, mommy product review blogs, etc.

Here are a few things that I currently like...

The first thing on my list is something that I have liked for a long time...  StickyPad sticky notes for computer desktops.  I have tried other desktop sticky notes and I love StickyPad notes the best.  The notes are reliable, slim, not technically or esthetically bulky and you can resize them and change the colors of the notes, etc.  I use them all of the time for grocery lists, budgeting, etc.  Something to note:  I have never had any trouble with spyware or adware from the StickyPad software download...I am very careful about what I allow on my computer and I never download programs "willy nilly".  The screen shot below is of my desktop...you can see my sticky notes...one is yellow and one is red.  Try them out!

The next item on my list for today is:   Windows Live Writer.  It has changed the way that I blog.  I do not blog directly from the Blogger website any longer.  Live Writer is an amazing Windows blog publishing tool that is very simple to use.  You can blog offline and then publish your post later on, you can easily add drop shadows or "photo paper" to your photos, you can wrap text around photos, etc.  It is just plain FUN.  It also works with many of the major blogging programs like Blogger and WordPress.  My blogging buddy Pam has a wonderful post about Windows Live Writer at her Secondhand Links blog titled "Windows Live Writer - in detail".  I read that post and I downloaded Live Writer immediately and I have been using it ever since.  One thing to note:  If you decide to download Live Writer, take note that you are given the option to also download Microsoft tool bars, etc...you can opt out of downloading those items...you are allowed to only download Live Writer if you don't want any "extras" on your computer.

Kisses, Kisses and More Kisses

Tonight, as I was getting ready to put Emma to sleep, we were sitting in the rocking chair in her room and I was reading her a few stories.  In the middle of the last story, I looked up and noticed that she wasn't looking at the book any longer.  She was looking right at me.  Then, she leaned in and gave me a baby kiss and then another kiss and then another.  I think that she gave me about ten baby kisses.  These are the moments that I did not even allow myself to dream about when I thought that I might not ever become a mother.

I am blessed beyond measure, beyond comprehension, beyond my wildest dreams.

I've said it a thousand times and I will say it ten thousand times more...  Emma is a treasure and my dream come true.

(Lots and lots of mushy posts lately, I know.  I just can't help it, though.  I'm just so thankful for my blessings)

Enjoy your weekend!!

July 4th, 2008 - Part 2

arbor1 We had a fun week this week celebrating the 4th and celebrating the fact that Jason had two days off in a row again (yay! a rarity at our house).

We went on an outing to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  I like plants, flowers, etc. and the arboretum is a great place to check out various specimens and planting combinations and to just take a walk and have a picnic.  It was  HOT day but we went early in the morning, so we were fine.

A few pics from our day at the arboretum...

Our 4th was pretty relaxing.  We stayed close to home and Emma enjoyed lots of pool time.  We had steak and a delicious salad and corn for dinner.  I am bummed that I barely took any pictures but we were having so much fun, I didn't even think about it.  Here are a few pics that I took...

4th of July, 2008...THE AFTERMATH photo.

july42

Emma and Jason right before we left to go to fireworks.

We brought Emma to the fireworks display in her pjs so that we could put her to bed as soon as we returned home.  And, as it turned out, that was a GREAT strategy.  You see, Emma's bedtime is 7:30ish.  Fireworks started at 10:00.  When we arrived at the park, Emma was VERY sleepy and when the fireworks started going off, she put her head on Jason's shoulder and closed her eyes tightly.  She wasn't afraid, but I think that she was just irritated that something SO LOUD was keeping her from getting her beauty rest.  ; )  She was asleep within minutes and she slept despite the VERY LOUD fireworks show.  : )

july44 Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that we had grilled corn with our dinner on the 4th.  Have you ever grilled corn?  Grilled corn is very tasty...you should try it!!  Some people leave the husks on when they grill corn, but we like to remove the husks and the silk, lightly oil the corn and then grill it for a few minutes on each side, turning it once in a while.  After the corn is cooked, we remove it from the grill and serve it with a garlic and rosemary butter.  We mix about 1/2 stick of butter with 1/2 - 1 clove of minced garlic and minced fresh rosemary to taste.  DELISH!!!!

She was so little!!  I wish that I could reach through the photos to give her a squeeze.  Babies grow so fast...too fast...I cherish each and everyday with Emma.  Everyday I remind myself that Emma will never again be as little as she is that day.

I love you, my baby girl.  Everyday is made more special because of your presence in my life.

Have a wonderful 4th, everyone!
