A New Roof

What a BIG JOB!!  We aren’t finished yet but we are working on it.  Thank you so much to our wonderful, dedicated and kind helpers!  A few pics from the past week…

Two Years Ago

wk1emmapool Two years ago today, I traveled to Guatemala to take full custody of Emma and to live there with her for several weeks before we were able to travel to the U.S. together.  Oh, how excited and nervous I was!

My gigantic rolling duffels, well worn from three previous visit trips to Guatemala, were packed to the MAX with supplies.  I remember the butterflies in my stomach when the plane touched down in Guatemala.

The next few hours were a whirlwind…  Shopping for Emma at Hiper Paiz (sort of like Walmart)  “How many packs of diapers should I buy?  What types of jar fruits and veggies should I purchase?  Hmmm…would she prefer pears or applesauce?  How many cans of formula should I purchase?”

wk1emmapool2wk1emmapool5

After a quick stop at a pharmacy, my sweet driver took me to the Westin Camino Real in Guatemala City.  I was a little frazzled so I went to freshen up quickly in the bathroom.  It wasn’t long before Emma’s beloved foster family arrived with Emma.  As I walked down the hall towards them, my eyes brimming with tears, I could see that Emma’s foster father had already been crying…tears were streaming down his face.  I just could not keep it in…I let the tears flow...I was (and still am) immensely grateful for the love and care that Emma’s foster family gave to Emma for the first seven months of her life.  The next several minutes went by so quickly…many exchanges were made…  Hugs, kisses, tears, instructions, thank yous, promises of love…  And, finally, sweet Emma Grace Esperanza was put in my arms…forever.  We then traveled to Antigua to get settled in.  (I purposely have never posted the photos that I took of Emma at the Westin that day…Emma was so confused…I have chosen to keep those photos private.  The photo above was taken a few days after she had warmed up to me).  emmapassport3

Our first night together was HEARTBREAKING.  Emma screamed and screamed and screamed…she was completely inconsolable.

She missed her foster family so much…they were WONDERFUL to her…they loved her so dearly and she missed them so much.

The next few weeks were difficult in that regard but she did warm up to me.

The photo to the right was taken the very next day.  Emma and I traveled from Antigua to Guatemala City together for Emma’s passport appointment.

emmapassport2 The next few weeks in Guatemala were nuts!  The stove exploded where we were staying and Emma became very sick with rotavirus and she was hospitalized for a few days.  After we left the hospital in Antigua, we moved away from Antigua before we had originally planned to so that we could be closer to Emma’s doctor in Guatemala City.  And, I could NOT understand why Emma was spitting up SO MUCH, not eating well and vomiting and not tolerant of bumpy/long stroller rides and carriers (later we discovered the true extent of her struggles with reflux).  Jason arrived a few days after we left the hospital and I was SO grateful to have extra help.  However, he became sick and was vomiting and passing out!  What a crazy trip!!  We are excited to go back to Guatemala some day so that we can enjoy the country more and see what we were not able to see because of all of the craziness.

Pre Mother’s Day Post 2009

Before I begin this post, I have some BREAKING NEWS…hee hee…little Emma used the BIG GIRL potty for the FIRST TIME last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  *cue the band and the confetti drop*  We are SO excited!  I don’t think that she actually *meant* to go, if that makes sense…so, it will be interesting to see what will happen from here on out…but, at least it’s a start!  Today we are going to Target for her promised stickers and new dolly…not sure who is more excited about that, Emma or Mama…hee hee.  Hope that little, bald Cabbage Patch Kid is still there!  : D

Onward…

I’m going to share with you what I posted last year around this time…the post is particularly meaningful to me.

“I think that if something truly wonderful happens in your life...maybe even a miracle...you can't truly appreciate the magnificent and life changing affects of the miracle unless or until you are able to look back at your life and soak in exactly what life was like before the miracle took hold.  So, look back and revisit the pain and then allow your heart to be filled with gratitude, deep appreciation and the understanding that can come from struggle.”  -- Tera

This is me, looking back...

For many, many years, I did not really care for Mother's Day.  For many years, Mother's Day simply reminded me of what I was not...  A Mother.

How I felt on Mother's Day was often dependent upon how I was feeling about infertility at that moment in time.  On some Mother's Days I would feel numb or indifferent.  On other Mother's Days I would feel fairly content.  And, sometimes, the sadness and emptiness would bring me to tears.

Jason and I struggled with infertility for approximately 10 years before Emma came into our lives.  For many years, we endured surgeries, extended periods of bed rest, a myriad of tests, infertility treatments, uncertainty, pain, sadness, emptiness, confusion, frustration and even fear.  And, there was an eventual emergency hysterectomy in 2004...the day after Thanksgiving...devastating.

With that said, I do want to say that I did not live for ten years in a constant state of  infertility crisis.  I was able to come to a point, with God's help, of tenuous acceptance of the fact that I might not ever have a child (additional infertility treatments and adoption were out of our reach financially) and I was able to continue to live my life in general contentment while loving and trusting God.  Acceptance further strengthened my relationship with God and helped me to weather a few pretty difficult storms.  My motto became...if the Lord allows me to have a child, I will serve Him...and, if He does not allow a child in my life, I will serve Him still.

I was challenged a bit when I was faced with a hysterectomy.  I thought that I had dealt fully with the fact that I might never have a biological child...however, what I figured out was that I HAD dealt with the probability of never having a biological child...HOWEVER, I STILL had the thought in the back of my mind that POSSIBLY by a miracle of God, I would at some point become pregnant...without additional treatments or any additional sort of medical intervention.  So, when I was faced with the fact that the only chance that I had left of conceiving was about to be taken away by a hysterectomy, I was faced with yet another wave of sadness and grief.  *sigh*

Yes, it was a tough ten years.  And, Mother's Days were often difficult...some of them more difficult than others.  It was tough to go to church on Mother's Day Sunday when the mothers were called to the front for a special prayer or for carnations.  It was tough.  It was tough to attend Mother's Day events without a child.  It was tough at times to see all of the joy around me while I was experiencing sadness.

I have a person in my life who also struggled with infertility for many years.  She eventually did become a mother.  Long before Jason and I began our adoption process,  she and I were chatting about infertility after her first child had come into her life.  She said that having a child in her life lessened the pain and the sadness that she felt while she was experiencing infertility and she also said that having a child did fill the hole in her life that was empty for so long.  But, she also said that having a child did not completely eradicate all of the pain and the sadness that was caused by infertility...the memories were still there.  At the time that she told me this, I frankly could not fully understand what she was talking about.  But, I now understand what she was trying to say.  Now that Emma is home, I do not think of infertility everyday.  I do not even think about it every two or three days.  But, I DO still think about it...the pain, the heartache...for me, it hasn't totally left...and, I'm not sure if it ever will fully...and, in some ways, I hope that it doesn't completely leave me...  From now on, while attending Mother's Day church services, I will be looking around the sanctuary, wondering how many women are suffering pain in their hearts...I will be wondering how many of them are experiencing a deep sadness.  If I had the pain of infertility completely taken from me, maybe I would not even think to wonder about that at all...or to pray.

If you are reading my blog, and if you are struggling with infertility or if you have struggled with it, I just want you to know that I understand your pain...I understand the struggle.  My pain may be different from your pain...but, pain is pain.  I understand the confusion, I understand the sadness.  I get it.  And, having a child in my life, one of my greatest joys, has not fully erased the memory of the heartache that I experienced before her miraculous arrival.  And, as I struggle to think of myself as "one of them" (someone with a child/kids)...please know that I also see myself as "one of you" (one who has struggled with infertility) because we have shared many of the same struggles and challenges.  So, on this Mother's Day, please know that I am thinking of you.  I get it.  I understand.  I do.

God bless,

Tera

Stuff

First and foremost…  On April 27th two years ago, Emma legally became OUR DAUGHTER!  I will never forget that day.  I thank the Lord everyday that our sweet Emma Grace is in our lives.  She is a GIFT!!  We love you so much, Emma!!

May is going to be an interesting month for us…  We have lived in our little rambler for about five years and we have wanted to do something with the exterior of our home since the day that we moved in.  However, we have spent all of our time, money and energy working on the inside of our house.  Well, we have put off working on the exterior of home long enough…our shingles are crumbling on the edges and we are the only home on the block that still has original siding.  So, there will be a few big changes this month and into June.  Our roof is going to get new shingles, we are going to get a few new windows and we are going to get new siding!  Our house isn’t even going to look like the same house!

A swatch of the approximate color of our soon-to-be new siding:

Basic and classic.  My stomach turns a little when I think of the money that we are going to have to put into these projects.  But, in the end, I know that I will be happy with the outcome…not only do we need to do this for maintenance purposes but I know that our house will look a million times better.  : )

God bless,

Tera

The Crib Has Been Converted

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon converting Emma’s crib to a toddler bed and re toddler proofing her room.

Emma has been able to swing her leg over the crib bar and shimmy out of her crib for months and months…however, we purchased The Cozy Crib Tent when we first discovered that she could swing her leg up and over the crib bar and the crib tent purchase bought her a few additional months in her crib.  BUT, with that said, she eventually shredded her poor crib tent and created a hole that was so large, she was able to fit her entire body through it.  So, we decided that the time had come to convert her crib into a toddler bed.

Evidence as to WHY a crib conversion was necessary!!   : O

cribconverted

A photo of the converted crib.  I absolutely LOVE this crib and Emma does too…it was one of my favorite purchases when we decided on items for Emma’s room.

After we converted the crib to a toddler bed, we re toddler proofed her room since she is now able to get out of bed at will and wander about.  We removed her large, upholstered rocking chair out of the room (she has just started to use it to reach items on the top of her book shelf).  We moved her changing table to our room because she is now able to climb up to the top of it using the drawer pulls (YIKES!)  We also secured her bookshelf to the wall because she is trying to use it as a jungle gym (she’s a climber).  We recovered a few of her outlets that were exposed due to moved furniture and we moved a little fan (aka the noise maker) to the top of her book shelf.  Her room is pretty stripped down.  She has her toddler bed, a book shelf and a soft mini chair along with a few stuffed animals and board books.

Reading a story with Papa before bedtime.  : )

So, are you wondering how Emma did last night…her first night in her toddler bed?  She did really well!!  She woke up one time and was a bit disoriented but after a few hugs from Papa, she went right back to sleep.  : )

I love you, sweet girl!  You are getting SO BIG, SO quickly!!  (Slow down…just a wee bit…Mommy’s heart is hurting just a little…)  ; )

God bless,

Tera
